Camino de Santiago - Coastal Way - Porto

Discover the Camino de Santiago by bicycle, along the Portuguese Coastal Way starting from Porto!

We invite you to do with us one of the routes currently most used by pilgrims due to its natural beauty since a large part of its length runs along the Portuguese and Spanish coasts.

The pilgrimages to Santiago date back to the 9th century, when the tomb of the Apostle Santiago the Greater was discovered. Since then, people from all over the world have ventured into various and different ways, taking risks and deprivations to visit and venerate Santiago.

This adventure begins in Sé do Porto and has as last stop in Portugal the beautiful village of Caminha, where we will cross the river Minho by boat to get into Spain. Then, we continue along the Spanish coast from A Guarda to Redondela, where we will take the Portuguese Central Way to Santiago de Compostela.

Our priorities are your satisfaction, comfort, and safety so you will make the tour on mountain bikes with and without total suspension, of the latest models from reputed brands.

Day 1: Oporto – Apúlia (58 km / 36 miles)

After we enjoy the Oporto city view, we leave the Praça da Sé by the picturesque alleys until we arrive at Praça da Ribeira. Here we find the Douro river which will guide us to the river mouth. Always by the sea, we pass through the fishing spots as Matosinhos and also some very small villages full of boats and fishing gear.

Once passed Póvoa de Varzim, we are now close to our destination today, the little village of Apúlia, where we will spend the night after a good fishmeal at the diner.

Day 2: Apúlia – Caminha (59 km / 36 miles)

We leave the village and we drove to Esposende. We leave a bit the seaside and the path becomes different with landscapes composed by woods and fields. Soon we cross the famous Eiffel Bridge and we arrive at Viana do Castelo, where we meet seaside again by a bicycle path that will get us to the beautiful village of Caminha.

Caminha, an ancient bastion of defense against Spanish and French, is now known for its beaches as well as is festivals and pilgrimages. We sleep here today with Spain in sight.

Day 3: Caminha – Vigo (64 km / 40 miles)

Today we start the day not to pedal but to sail. We cross the estuary of the Minho river to our first Spanish town, A Guarda. We head to Vigo, always by the seaside where we pass through numerous villages of which we highlight Oia, for its imposing monastery, and Baiona, with its fort and the port of recreation and fishing. Here, we make an excursion in its narrow interior streets full of bars and restaurants where we can enjoy a well-deserved and refreshing drink that will help you to overcome the last miles that are missing to finally arrive in Vigo. This is the main Spanish fishing port and one of the biggest in the world. We are going to sleep here today, but before we will enjoy some of the well known Galician wonderful fish and other delicacies and of course enjoy the bars and the “movida”.

Day 4: Vigo – Caldas de Reys (65 km / 40 miles)

We leave Vigo bypassing its important estuary where the famous mussels are created as well as other mollusks and shellfish. We will arrive soon at Redondela, where we start to use the Central Portuguese Route that takes us to Pontevedra, the capital of the province of Galicia. We cross the city through its historical streets towards Caldas de Reys, our destiny of this fourth day with its thermal baths and spas which, as the village, date back to Roman times.

Day 5: Caldas de Reys – Santiago de Compostela (43 km / 26 miles)

Santiago is getting closer. We now take the direction of Padrón, known for its famous peppers, fairs, and festivals. We are now in the final stage, just a few miles separate us from the Praça do Obradoiro, in Santiago de Compostela, where we will pose for the always exciting and inevitable final photo with the cathedral in the background.

Ok, everything end´s, but we still have time for a deserved bath in the hotel followed by a goodbye lunch. The rest of the day? Well that is up to you, finally you will get rid of us and you can enjoy the rest of the day knowing better the historic city of Santiago.
